Insulin MDV in patient care areas

Hello,

I wanted to reach out regarding an infection prevention concern that came up during a recent mock survey at one of our hospitals. We were cited in the ED for not adhering to CDC guidelines, which state that if a multi-dose vial enters an immediate patient treatment area, it should be dedicated for single-patient use only.

I’m curious to hear how other organizations are managing this in the ED and procedure areas, particularly with insulin MDVs. Are you dedicating insulin MDV for single-patient use in these areas? Do you have labels automatically print from the ADC when nursing pulls an insulin dose to be drawn up from MDV, and use the printed barcode for BCMA scanning? Do you have pre-printed insulin barcode labels available in your ADCs so nurses can label the syringe after drawing the dose?

Appreciate any feedback or ideas you can share about how you are addressing this issue
